2021 wedding – top tips on how to plan your perfect day

Planning your 2021 wedding may seem daunting after the challenging experiences of 2020… but it doesn’t need to be…

We’ve shared some of our top tips below to help you navigate through these uncertain times and plan your day to perfection!

1 – PRIORITISE
What’s most important to you? Smaller gatherings (which can go ahead within most levels of lockdown) could allow for a more indulgent experience and can be followed by a big party later on, perhaps on the first wedding anniversary…

Or you could split your day into sections and host separate guest lists after the ceremony for, say, brunch, afternoon tea and a cocktail party!

2 – BE FLEXIBLE
You may need to compromise on location or opt for a weekday if you are committed to tying the knot in 2021 as many traditional venues are already booked on key days/dates. If you need to postpone, your caterer can help with most details – see transforming Summer weddings for Winter for some points you may want to consider.

If your heart is set on a specific location, or you are committed to a large guestlist, you may find it less stressful to opt for a date in 2022.

3 – BOOK SUPPLIERS
With so many postponements last year, availability for a 2021 wedding will become more limited as Spring approaches. Booking earlier may offer savings, as it will ‘lock in’ costs which may otherwise go up as demand increases, but make sure you read the small print to avoid large fees if plans change.

The vast majority of wedding industry suppliers understand the difficulties faced by couples and, like us, are offering flexible terms and conditions and a generous approach to cancellation fees. If you opt for wedding insurance, make sure you’ve read the insurer’s updated policy relating to COVID as it may not include coverage for losses relating to governmental lockdowns.

4 – DESTINATION UK
Whilst it may still be possible to continue with a destination wedding this year, a UK wedding lowers the risk of cancellation and you can still celebrate in your chosen style!

Our wedding planners can bring any theme to life and our talented chefs can create a wealth of global dishes. For inspiration, check out some of our signature canapés or Your London Wedding which recently featured some of our seasonal wedding breakfast menus.

5 – TIME FOR DIY
Couples with more time available have been creating their own favours or decorations and even following YouTube tutorials so they can take care of their own hair and make-up on the day. Some keen bakers are even making their own cakes – for one wedding we created a dessert station around the Bride’s impressive cake (request our wedding brochure to see this and lots of other exquisite Blue Strawberry wedding days).

It’s easier than ever to create your own simple website which could hold updated information for guests as details change. This could also save you or your stationer from creating multiple versions of paper invitations which could be costly to your pocket as well as the environment.

6 – BE MINDFUL
For many of us, lockdown life has provided much opportunity for reflection. This in turn has intensified our collective desire to adopt a more sustainable approach and shop small or local wherever possible.

Ethical sourcing has been a growing trend for some years now and we are delighted to see increased demand for vegetarian or vegan menus, along with a greater interest in seasonality and provenance in general.

7 – CATCH UP
After a year like 2020, most of us just want to have some FUN! Following lengthy periods of separation from many of our loved ones, 2021 weddings will offer precious opportunities for families and friends to catch up in person. As such, we expect more couples to break out of traditional expectations and open up their day to allow more space for interaction.

Speak to your caterer, as there’s lots we can do – from extending the welcome reception (adding substantial canapés or food stations to stop guests getting too tipsy!) to swapping a plated pudding for an engaging dessert station or even creating a chef’s table experience (check us out at Kensington Palace). A raucous wedding after-party with late night snacks, cheeky cocktails and dancing into the early hours is another option of course…!
